The "Thankful Box".

Wow, where do I begin?  I guess I'll just start by telling you what has been kind of overtaking me this past weekend.  Thankfulness.  I recently began reading "One Thousand Gifts" by Ann Voskamp.  My weekend hasn't been the same since.  My husband Buzz (Mr. Shabby) was out of town so I had the whole place to myself and the weiner dogs. Usually that means football games are blarring on every TV, music on outside...you know game day stuff.  Well not Saturday.  Sharon, Brad and I had gone yard saling all morning and when I got home it was peaceful and quiet.  My first initial thought was, Go turn on the football games. Something, SOMEONE had different ideas...."Go read some more of that book"  So I gathered up my old tattered quilt, Buddie and Kaya, and my new book
Life doesn't get much better than this!!  Peace and quiet, a beautiful fall afternoon and a snuggly wiener dog

I love a challenge...I mean really love it.  This book basically challenged me to list and NAME 1000 gifts that I have been blessed with.  I couldn't find a pad of paper quick enough...I am crazily writing down so many things the Lord has blessed me with and I haven't even hit 50 yet!  Its really gotten me to thinking, how incredibly blessed I am IN SO MANY WAYS, from windows open on a fall night to the aroma filling my home from a crock pot. I seriously am committed to this challenge...I want to be a thankful, grateful person.  I'll let you know from time to time how its coming along and I would LOVE it if any of you were up to the challenge with me!!

Ok, so you are probably wondering what The "Thankful Box" is all about.  Years ago when Andrew and Lindsey were small, we started a family tradition called the Thankful Box.

Its just a little plastic box, post it notes and a pen I set out every November and asked everyone to write down things they were thankful for. Fold up your secret blessing and put it in the box.  The box started out empty, but by Thanksgiving day is was hard to even close up.  Then during Thanksgiving supper, we would pass the box around the table and everyone would take turns reading the folded up treasures of thankfulness. We had everything from thankful for not flunking a test, to yea...the Titans won!!  We had so much fun doing this...it was truly a highlight of Thanksgiving.  After the holiday was over, I would keep all the post its to read at a later time. I now have a bagful of blessings kept thru the years.

So in closing today, I would like to ask you...What would be the first blessing that would go in your  Thankful Box?

Have a great week and Stay Shabby!!
Julie

100th Follower Celebration Giveaway!!! "Name that Piece"....

Happy Monday everyone!  Sharon and I are so excited to announce we've reached 100 awesome followers on our blog!  Yippee!!  You all are the best and to show our appreciation we are going to have our first giveaway.  Prizes are a $25 gift card to Target and an awesome book by Diane Moody called "The Runaway Pastors Wife"  Sharon and I have personally read this book and its really a great page turner.  You can check out Diane's website at dianemoody.net.  She was also our first guest blogger on 8/22/11  Thanks Diane!

Ok..so on to the contest.  A few weeks back my son, his girlfriend and I went yard saling together.  At our very first stop I spotted this beauty...I HAD to have it...

$50 later it was in my truck heading home.  Sharon and I knew exactly what look we wanted to achieve, so out came the Annie Sloan chalk paints.  We did a mixture of Versailles and Country Grey, a little distressing and finished it with a coat of wax   Ooo-la-la!!

Sharon came up with a great idea to "name" all our pieces of furniture we finish.  They all have such different personalities and after we spend so much time making them over, they feel like family and deserve a name.
So thats your job now...Name That Piece.

There are 4 ways to enter... so 4 different possible entries!
1.  name that piece...give it a name and a short explantion why
2.  If you're not yet a follower of Vintage Shabby Chicks, become one now
3.  "Like" our Facebook page..the link is on our sidebar
4.  "Share" our contest on your Facebook page

Thanks to all of you for participating in our first giveaway!! The winner will be selected Monday, October10,2011  Good luck and Stay Shabby!!
Julie and Sharon

P.S. for those of you in middle Tennessee, this piece will be in the Bellevue Antique Mall's new location on Hwy.70S next week
