when you were a child did you ever have a monster under your bed?
i don't remember having one then, but i have a monster in my garage right now...
i know i shouldn't say this about a custom piece of furniture, especially since it's going in a sweet newborn baby boy's nursery,
i don't remember having one then, but i have a monster in my garage right now...
i know i shouldn't say this about a custom piece of furniture, especially since it's going in a sweet newborn baby boy's nursery,
but this dresser has been our nemesis
'the red monster'
it was a solid wood dresser that had been painted white at one time
our client wanted annie sloan chalk paint (ascp) 'emperor's silk'
we've used many colors of ascp, but this would be our first time to use this color.
we've used many colors of ascp, but this would be our first time to use this color.
our friend, denise, had painted her bar stools with this color & was ready to scream by the time she was done
she warned us to stay away & "don't even go there"
she was so over 'emperor's silk' & we thought we were up for the challenge
so we got the rest of her can of paint... which was the birth of the 'red monster'
emperor's silk got the best of us...
it doesn't show well in the pic, but this is after 2 coats of paint
it wouldn't go on smoothly (streaks upon streaks)
the color is so uneven
the old white paint & other marks were still showing thru
& we were almost out of paint!
so on to plan 'b' except we had no plan 'b'
we've used other color's of ascp numerous times & never had a problem,
we love this paint...
we love this paint...
we needed a red that would give us better coverage.
so, we asked our client to pick out a new color of paint at home depot
she chose martha stewart's 'vermilion' & we had home depot mix the color in behr, paint with primer.
it turned out that it was a nice thick paint that gave good coverage!
thank goodness the monster was somewhat tamed...
it's still not the best piece we've done & our client hasn't seen it yet in person, so we'll see... as a matter of fact it's being delivered to her home at this very moment & i'm a little nervous...
julie talked to our local ascp stockist, tawnya, at
she said that we should not have had that problem, this is one of her favorite colors
so, we'll take the little bit that's left & let her look at it. hop on over to her blog to meet tawnya & if you live in the middle tn area please stop in her shop, you won't be disappointed.
we're so glad to have this project behind us & have already moved on
it may be a while before we do another red piece, memories of the 'red monster' are still too fresh.
we'll let you know what our client thought of the piece & will try to get a pic of it in the nursery for you to see
thank you for stopping by & sharing in our latest adventure

Hi Sharon & Julie,
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE the dresser and so has everyone else who has seen it!!!! It was exactly what I wanted for the nursery...and I am so sorry that the red paint caused you all such a headache! Yikes! I'm going to send you a picture to post - the dresser was the final touch I wanted for the nursery, and I am so, completely pleased! This is a dresser that my baby boy can grow up with - it's sturdy and fun. Thank you for all of your hard work and...perseverance! I will keep you in mind for future projects (which I promise not to ask for red).
Happy Thanksgiving, ladies!
Wendy
I think the dresser turned out beautifully! You would never know that it started out so monstrously!
